Satan and the demons were formerly Angels created by God for His purposes in Heaven.
Originally, Satan's name was Lucifer 'The Light Bringer' - and it seems that he led the praise and worship of God in the heavenly courts.

However, he rebelled against God, becoming proud of his own great beauty - which was foolishness in the extreme considering he is a 'created' being like all of us.
He managed to persuade about one third of the heavenly host to join his uprising and the result was that God cast them down from heaven and changed their names and nature. Thus Lucifer became Satan 'The accuser + deceiver'.

He is, for a limited time, 'Prince of this world' - Jesus acknowledged him as such. But he was completely, thoroughly, soundly defeated by Jesus death on the cross at Calvary 2,000+ years ago - The Son of God giving His unblemished life for our sins.

Satan knows he has a limited time left and he is determined to wreak as much death and destruction as possible before Jesus returns.Just look at the state of the world!

Satan is the embodiment of hatred and totally evil. He only ever lies, and even hates those who 'serve' him. People who are Satanists and think that they will be rewarded by their 'master' are in for a big shock. He is merely entangling them in his web of hatred for mankind too. They will all ultimately join him in The Lake of Fire.

Descriptions of his powers, activity and personality are found throughout the Bible:

He is a created being, a former Archangel, and thus is inferior to God.

He can be only in one place at one time.

He has limits to his knowledge and power.

Satan cannot perform any acts unless God approves - [Job Ch1v 6 to 2:10].

His word cannot be tusted. He is a liar - the father of all lies.[John Ch 8 v 44]

He is the ruler of the earth - [John Ch12v31, Ephesians Ch 6v:12 - and 2nd Corinthians Ch4v4]

He leads a personal army of demons - [Matthew Ch12v24]

He can adopt a spirit form, reside inside a person - [along with his demons] - and influence their thoughts and behavior:

He is described as a spirit who works within 'the children of disobedience.' - [Ephesians Ch2v2]

The bible describes how Satan 'put into' Judas Iscariot's mind the decision to betray Jesus. - [John Ch 13 v2]

Satan filled Ananias' heart with the decision to lie to the Holy Ghost about how much he got for selling a field. - [Acts Ch5v3]

His existence places humans in extreme peril and the whole Satanic realm is not to be toyed with. This includes such things as tarot cards, ouija boards and all other 'fortune telling' material.

He is described as 'prowling around the earth like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.' - [1 Peter Ch5v8]

The Bible describes Satan as having a personal army of demons - [from the Greek word 'daimon' - meaning 'intelligent'] - to assist him.
