Love

So what is this thing we call love ? . . . . .

Here's what the Bible has to say.

  Love is always patient and kind;
  It is never jealous;
  Love is never boastful or conceited;
  It is never rude or selfish;
  It does not take offence,
  And is not resentful.
  Love takes no pleasure in other peoples sins -
  But delights in the truth;
  It is always ready to excuse, to trust, to hope, and to endure whatever comes.

This is God's definition of love - found in The New Testament.

So how do your  ideas of what love is, match up to this? - This is the definition of what love really is.

Love is not sex - love is not just a 'feeling' - [although feelings play a big part] - love isn't what you say. Many people would be more honest saying " I lust you" to their partner of the moment.

The world is full of totally wrong assumptions about love. The lyrics of various songs tell you 'Love Hurts' - 'Love will break your heart' - 'Love is a flame that burns you' etc. These things actually refer to the results of various kinds of lust. When one or other persons in a relationship put their needs first.

So often, what we do is based on emotions and feelings that are the result of our separation from the love of God. Our need for gratification.

No, it's our fallen human nature that brings pain. Our selfishness, our self centred egos.
Look again at the bible's definition of love at the top of the page.

Love is what you do without thought for yourself. God is love.
Jesus said ' Greater love has no man than this - that he lay down his life for his friends'

Love is all about 'giving' - putting the other person first - subjecting our desire for self gratification, and turning it into a force that meets the needs of others.

The Bible tells us that no matter what we may accomplish - if we do not do it in love it is utterly worthless. [ 1 Corinthians Ch 13].
The word 'Charity' actually means LOVE.
