At first glance, the sacrificing of innocent little animals does seem a rather cruel and harsh thing to do. But we must remember that everything is not now, as it was originally designed to be.

Had Adam and Eve obeyed God - then we would not have had the system of sacrifices for the forgiveness of sins.
The Bible tells us in Genesis Ch 3 v 21 - that God killed an animal and made garments to 'cover' Adam and Eve - AFTER THEY HAD DISOBEYED BY EATING FROM THE TREE OF THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOOD AND EVIL- AND THUS ALLOWING SIN TO ENTER THE WORLD.

When we try - with our little created 'peanut' brains - to sus out the mind of the creator of the entire Universe - we inevitably fail miserably.

The Bible tells us that 'Without the shedding of blood their can be no remission [forgiveness] for sin'
[Hebrews Ch 9 v 22]

Distasteful as it may seem to our limited understanding - God said that the only 'covering' for sin would be the sacrifice of an 'unblemished' i.e. 'innocent' creature. And he instituted a system of sacrifices for the Levitical priesthood of Israel.

Different creatures - lambs - doves - goats were to be sacrificed to atone for different sins.

The high priest had to go into the innermost special part of the temple - The Holy place - once a year to offer the blood sacrifice for the sins of the nation.

Yet this was only a temporary 'forgiveness' - it would have to be done all again the following year - and it was a very strict ritual that if the priest did not get right - he would die!

YET ALL OF THIS WAS ONLY A PRECURSOR - IT WAS A PICTURE OF WHAT JESUS THE SON OF GOD WAS COMING TO DO! - TO SHED HIS OWN BLOOD!

Jesus was totally innocent - yet He was sacrificed - that's why one of His titles is THE LAMB OF GOD - the one who takes away the sins of the world.

Since Jesus's death the sacrifices are no longer needed - He died once for all people.

However those Jews who chose to reject Him are still vainly trying to make the old sacrifices in the hope it will cleanse them from sin.
It will not.

Temporary salvation can no longer be found in the blood of lambs - doves or goats.

Salvation - the total forgiveness of your sins - is found only in The Lord Yeshua [Jesus]

So now you can see why all those little animals were sacrificed. Temporary forgiveness until The Lord of All came and gave His own life - for you.
